We are seeking a Companion / Care Worker for a youth in Northwest Calgary.

General Description

This is multi function care worker position including: Community Support; Respite (short term); Before and After School, and; Personal Care.

Hours of work

Up to 30 hours per week, before and after school, some weekday evenings, some weekend hours, . (negotiable)


15-year old male with Angelman syndrome (non-verbal).  Client is affectionate, has a generally happy demeanor, enjoys accompaniment of others and being in social situations.  Enjoys sensory activities.  Is learning to use an iPad for communication.

Medical Issues

Client has Angelman syndrome with controlled seizures, speech absence, irregular sleep, some fine and gross motor deficits, and a number of allergies.


Community Support

Companion – Guide and participate in appropriate activities including swimming, bike rides, outdoor play, Special Olympics, Challenger Little League, arts, crafts and/or musical programming.  May also support client at family events and other related activities.

Respite Care

Companion – In client’s home for short-term respite (3 to 6 hours once or twice per week).

Before and After School Care (negotiable)

1.5* hours morning and 2* hours afternoon to support getting ready for and returning home from school (* 3 hour minimum may apply)

Personal Care

Client requires varying levels of support with all aspects of personal care including, showering, dressing, toileting, etc.  Requires periodic physical support (e.g. stairs) and redirection to ensure safe movement (e.g. crossing street) through the community (protective care).


  • Must have own transportation, valid driver’s license, calm driver
  • Must have valid police security check
  • Must be Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada
  • Must be willing to learn communication device
  • Non smoking


This position requires an individual who is calm and has a mature disposition.  You must not only be patient and respectful, but also have a sense of humor.  You will enjoy the outdoors and occasional physically active work, and you will also just be able to chill and relax.  Spontaneity will be the norm, some activities can be planned, but plans may have to change on short notice.
